YUAN.YIN STATEMENT

I often find myself  feeling like an outsider, being an Asian studying in America. I observe western culture from an eastern lens and at the same time never feel completely Chinese. I identify as multicultural, a person able to accept different visual languages from varied sources -sometimes even with an unknowing or innocent disregard for their original contexts. I am driven by a curiosity for things unfamiliar and strange. My works experiment using different materials, techniques, and methods to express this feeling of being in between. I combine traditional Chinese methods, such as using ink on rice paper, with an American abstract sensibility of direct and bold color. These different cultures collide in a way to inspire each creation and bring the viewer a wonderful cultural experience to diffuse.
